Warehouse Management System with INControl

What is Warehouse Management?

The main goal in a supply chain operation is to fulfil and dispatch customers’ orders quickly and efficiently within quality control standards – and then to optimise operations, processes, and staff productivity to achieve this successfully. Effective warehouse management is needed to get this right so that the business is as efficient and profitable as possible.

Warehouse management defined

This can be referred to as the management of all activities, tasks, and processes in the day-to-day operations of a warehouse. In other words, it’s what’s going on “behind the scenes” in a supply chain operation. This includes receiving and organising warehouse space, creating labour schedules for improved productivity, arranging inventory, fulfilling orders, and managing reverse logistics too. All these crucial parts of managing a warehouse should be streamlined and integrated, so that they work well together and to ensure lower costs.

Let’s go through some of the components of warehouse management, in a bit more detail.

Exploring the keys parts of warehouse management

Inventory tracking and management

This includes maintaining real-time visibility and control over your stock or inventory levels. Your stock should be organised and stored properly, where it’s easily accessible by your staff. They can then locate and retrieve products quicker, which helps you push out orders faster. Then, stock records should be accurate and up-to-date, ensuring adequate stock availability, and so you can avoid over or under-stocking.

Warehouse layout and space optimisation

To have an optimal warehouse layout, you should be analysing factors such as product sizes and storage requirements, so you can maximise inventory storage and avoid additional storage costs. As a result, you can reduce workspace congestion and improve the overall workflow in the warehouse.

Receiving, putting away, selecting, and packing

When goods arrive from suppliers, it is important to have a process in place to inspect and check the goods, followed by allocating adequate storage and updating the inventory records. You could organise the space effectively so similar items are stored together. When orders need to go out,  it’s important to select the right products from the warehouse, so that you can fulfill orders correctly and efficiently. Additionally, proper packing procedures are needed to meet customer requirements and ensure consistency throughout the warehouse.  Each part of this process should be streamlined and synchronised, where there is clear communication between each division, for optimal warehouse management.

Shipping and returns

The shipping and returns process should be simplified and automated, where you have efficient carrier selection, label generation, and shipment tracking processes carried out. This enables you to reduce shipping costs, improve delivery times, and efficiently handle returns, to maintain a competitive edge in the market.

Workforce productivity

To manage your warehouse efficiently, your staff members should be adequately trained and equipped with the necessary tools that help them boost their work ethic, task turnaround times, and importantly minimise errors in your warehouse.

You might be thinking, how do I manage all of this at once? This is where powerful automation and actionable data insights from a software system becomes extremely useful.

A 4PL supply chain management system is what we’re talking about.

Choosing a warehouse management system

Every business is different. Your warehousing needs could be unique too, which might affect the system you choose. But often, the same rules apply throughout the supply chain. You need efficiency and to deliver goods fast, at the lowest costs possible, while staying competitive too. Ultimately, you need a system that allows you to streamline your operation so you can scale or grow your business. INControl’s 4PL system helps you take control of your entire warehouse operation. It lets you track shipments, monitor inventory levels, and manage logistics operations on one single platform, reducing any complexities.

The system’s data is in your hands, to make proactive decisions in the warehouse, identify areas for improvement and create fast changes.
