Create Opportunities with a Growth Mindset
Dr. Carol Dweck, a professor at Stanford University is well-known for her research into the concepts of the fixed and growth mindset. In her research, she examined the behaviours of thousands of kids who failed at a task, and found that those with a fixed mindset were more likely to give up than those with a growth mindset. In her 2014 TED talk, she further emphasised that a ‘growth mindset’ means the ability to expand our brain’s capacity for learning and problem-solving
Fortunately, in recent years, the business world has embraced the power of cultivating a growth mindset.
There are many reasons why a growth mindset in business matters. It can be a catalyst for making your business more productive, profitable, and resilient.
Why? Because profitability starts with you. Every part of your business is influenced by your beliefs, attitudes, and actions.
Negative thinking equals self-imposed limitations.
Positive thinking equals opportunities.
We will explore some advantages of having a growth mindset.
The benefits of creating business opportunities with a growth mindset
- Competitive advantage. For individuals with a growth mindset, challenges become opportunities to innovate and stand out from competitors. They push boundaries, uncover innovative solutions, and will adapt more quickly to market shifts than their competitors. New technologies are embraced, while innovative strategies and unique business models are developed to compete with much larger businesses.
- Thirst for improvement. Dweck states that people with a “growth mindset,” enjoy challenges, where they use them as an opportunity to learn and consistently develop new skills. And they give their employees the tools to do the same. This is a key factor in employee retention and success.
- Effective leadership. Growth-oriented people are more likely to become successful leaders because they see others’ potential and are less focused on their faults. Their core belief in the potential for people to change and grow not only fosters a positive outlook in their business but also enhances decision-making. This is because a growth mindset encourages a proactive and adaptable approach to challenges, enabling leaders to make informed decisions that prioritise growth instead of stagnation.
- Overcoming setbacks. Running a business is full of ups and downs, where new and unexpected challenges may arise. If we don’t quickly get back up from failures, we could end up drowning in our business efforts. We can look at those who emerged from the ashes of failure, as a starting point. Adrianna Huffington, for instance, got rejected by 36 publishers. – so we can say that she had “36 failures.” or alternatively, we can attribute this to her amazing current success, as she is now one of the most successful outlets on the web. And then there is the quote from the famous Thomas Edison “I have not failed. I’ve just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.” After trying and failing to perfect the lightbulb many times, Edison finally succeeded. Edison’s persistence is a perfect example of how a growth mindset can help you overcome setbacks. Without one, learning is hard on our psyche, and we can’t overcome mistakes and failures.
